Synchronizing Speech Recognition Software with Medical Transcription to Increase Productivity

The speech recognition software is a computer program that automatically converts the spoken words into text on the computer screen. The voice recognition software is programmed in such a way that it identifies the speaker through vocal chord identification technique. The idea is to train the software so that it understands the voice pattern of the dictator and converts it, into text precisely, at a faster rate.

When it comes to medical documentation system, medical transcription plays a crucial role in efficient management of electronic patient health information. In transcription process, the transcriptionist listens to recorded voice file and uses computer keyboard to type in the corresponding text on the screen. As medical transcription is a manual process it takes more time to transcribe a report compared to the voice recognition software, which instantly converts the speech to text. Hence by using this software the turnaround time of the transcribed report can be shortened, considerably.

However, even the latest technological advancements in speech recognition software do not guarantee 100% accuracy. There are some shortcomings in the software, which can induce errors in the transcribed reports and thus seriously affect the outcome of treatment. For medical application there are two types of voice recognition software:
  • The Front-end type voice recognition system, in which the words are displayed as they are spoken and the speaker, generally a physician is responsible for editing and signing the document. Here no transcriptionist or editor is required.
  • The Back-end voice recognition system, spoken words are converted into a drafted document. This document is routed along with corresponding voice file to the medical transcriptionist or an editor, who edits and finalizes the document.
Of the two, the Back-end type voice recognition system is preferred. It provides an additional quality control back-up in form of, a pair of trained eyes of the medical transcriptionist, which efficiently filter out the transcribing errors made by the software. The other advantage that this combination of human effort and software provides is, considerable reduction in the turnaround time of the transcribed report, without compromising the prevalent quality standards in the industry.

Speech to Text conversion software and medical transcriptionist can together make the medical documentation process quicker, safer and more accurate.
